Dressing up and pretending to be someone or something else is an activity
that will never go out of shape. Whether it is in the form of a small school production for the child or an
elaborate Halloween masquerade for an older individual, occasions where we are able to dress up reflect on the
more whimsical aspects of our imagination. Some of the more popular subjects for dressing up are the different
animals we only either see in zoos or in pictures: huge but silent predators lurking in the forest, gentle
prancing animals roaming around the plains, exotic creatures only found in the darkness of the depths of the
deepest oceans. Of these animals, few are more iconic, distinguishable and lovable than the African zebra, as
seen in the many different sorts of zebra suit and zebra face mask out there today.
For children, there are few animals as easily recognizable as the zebra, as its unique pattern of black stripes
on a white background makes it unique among animals (except, perhaps, for a Siberian tiger, but that is a different matter altogether). Practically any child who has
picked up and looked through a book on wild animals will be able to instantly recognize black stripe on white
background, whether the pattern is applied on cloth, paper or card. Also, there are so many different designs of
mask to choose from, ranging from simple ones that only cover the eyes to elaborate creations which attempt to
recreate every feature in the head of a zebra, from the snout to the mane. This luxury of choice also makes it
convenient for parents as well, as they will not be limited to one design only.
The possibilities of a zebra face mask only increase when used by older people. In addition to the
aforementioned luxury of choice, adults can also opt to go as a group with a theme that includes a zebra in it.
Think about it: a group can, for example, go to a party with their theme being something connected to the different
animals found in the African savannah, with one going as a lion, one as an elephant, one as a rhinoceros, and of
course, one as a zebra. Or a group can go with the theme of having only striped animals to use as costumes: one can
be a tiger, one can be a badger, one can be a coral snake, and one can, again, go as the zebra. Or one can even go
on a less blatant route, possibly by having only animals that are black and white: one can be a penguin, one a
skunk, one a panda, and one a zebra.
Instantly recognizable, easy to make and full of potential. The zebra face mask is all these and
more.
