Next Halloween (or animal-themed party), stand out from a sea of traditional
farm creatures and come as an exotic, look-at-me zebra. Of course, your wild ensemble would not be complete
without zebra costume ears. If the other guests have trouble discerning what
the black and white streaks on your suit are for, they will not have any problem determining your zebra-ness
with well-made, adorable costume ears. Introduce your child to an impromptu zoology lesson by getting him or her
excited about coming as a crazy-looking pony to the costume party. Zebra ears and costume suits are easy to make
or buy, and they will be very unique. A zebra will definitely be the life of the party, and the favorite on the
street gang of trick-or-treaters.
Making the Costume
To determine what your costume (and ears) would be like, peruse photos of zebras via your favorite search engine
(or tune in to National Geographic, Discovery Channel, or Animal Planet). Zebras have fuzzy ears with
markings that match the stripes on the rest of their body. Just like no two people have the same fingerprints,
no two zebras also have the same pattern of stripes. A zebra’s stripes are swingy and tapered towards the belly
and the thighs. The stripes often form a diamond pattern on the zebra’s forehead and around the eyes.
To make your zebra costume and zebra costume ears, it
would usually be easier to use fabrics or articles of clothing which already have zebra patters on them (if you
have not noticed, animal prints are very in right now, so it should not be hard to acquire zebra-patterned
leggings, tops, socks, or belts). If you do not have these items at hand, you can have fun making your very own
zebra prints on white fabrics. Use a pencil to create the stripes pattern first. Then, use a thick brush to fill in
the insides of the pattern with black fabric paint. Use a thinner brush to fill in and define the edges. Allow the
paint to dry properly.
To make the zebra ears, you can customize an old headband with extra fabric scraps from your costume project.
Store-bought fur or light-colored velvet paper can be used as the ear’s lining, and also to help give the ears more
structure and height. You can also create a black mane using a long trail of several yarn threads knotted or
braided together.
A zebra suit complete with zebra costume ears can be chic and fashionably fierce on a grown-up party, and it
can be cute and attention-grabbing on a child. Whoever wears it definitely enjoys a memorably experience being
an animal that is black, white, and fantastic all over.
